Participant in the 1956 Expedition
Albert Eggler 1913 1998, Expedition Leader.
Albert Eggler was an outstanding all-round Alpine expert who had proved his capabilities on many long and difficult high-altitude tours in the Berner Oberland and the Mont Blanc region. During military courses in the mountains, he gained experience of management in leadership functions, as well as comprehensive knowledge of team-work in mountainous conditions, bivouac construction, materials and advance and retreat. A member of the Academic Alpine Club Bern (the AACB) from 1934, he belonged to that elite group of mountaineers around Wolfgang Diehl who were observing developments around the climbs in the Himalayas. At the beginning of 1955, the SSAF appointed Albert Eggler as overall leader for the 1956 Expedition.
